The Director of Facilities reports to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, serves on the school’s Finance & Operations Team, and attends the Board of Trustees Buildings and Grounds Committee meetings. The Director will manage a team of approximately 15 people and will participate in short-term and long-term decision-making concerning 145,000 square feet of campus buildings on 6 acres in Palo Alto, California. The Director is responsible for developing and maintaining the buildings and grounds in a manner that is supportive of the school community and the school’s mission and goals. With a major construction project underway, this is an exciting time to be joining our community in this capacity.
Exempt, full-time position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Directly supervises the maintenance and custodial staff, including job assignment, department organization, hiring/terminations, meeting with staff regularly, and providing timely, effective performance evaluations
- Responsible for the general maintenance of the plant facilities, making recommendations to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer for short and long term major repairs, and handling minor repairs on a priority basis
- Maintains and implements a planned maintenance system, including documentation
- Regularly inspects facilities for preventative maintenance, and ensures no safety hazards exist
- Determines whether major and minor repairs/enhancements should be completed in-house or by outside contractors. Obtains outside bids, makes recommendations, and coordinates work for outside contractors
- Maintains all major equipment, determining and negotiating outside service contracts when necessary
- Coordinates work of outside major contractors to maximize product for school needs
- Prepares and oversees facilities operating budget and capital plan
- Oversees school’s rental properties, ensuring that the houses are well maintained
- Responsible for the Department budget, expenditures, and annual budget planning
- Serves on the Safety Committee, developing and implementing policies and procedures
- Partners with the Director of Campus Operations and Compliance in overseeing the school’s transportation program
- Partners with the Director of Health and Safety for the School’s security and safety program
- Partners with relative administrators to ensure the IIPP is updated annually as needed and employees are educated and receive annual training if applicable
- Partners with the Director of HR to assess and manage ADA accessibility on campus
- Responsible for School events set up
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- 8-10 years of physical plant maintenance experience with supervisory responsibilities including oversight of major building projects
- Thorough knowledge of skilled trade work requirements, including plumbing, electrical, and carpentry, HVAC, masonry, roofing, and other building systems
- pumps, motors, grounds maintenance, and general mechanical operations and procedures
- Knowledge of MSDS requirements and procedures
- Knowledge of Cal-OSHA training and compliance requirements
- Ability to provide required periodic safety trainings
- Excellent organizational and communication skills with high level of attention to detail
- Demonstrated success in timely, efficient project management and budget oversight
- Demonstrated ability to manage, mentor, and motivate a diverse staff

- Prior experience in an educational setting (independent school, public school, college or university) preferred
- Valid CA driver’s license with clean driving record
Physical Requirements:
This position is required to lift up to 50 pounds. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, crouch, sit, bend, stretch, climb and crawl. The specific vision requirements include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus in dimly lit areas.

- Castilleja uses a competitive salary scale which takes into account the range of experience, education and skill level. The yearly salary for this position ranges from $155,000 to $180,000
