Under direct supervision, to trim, prune, plant, and perform basic tree maintenance; remove trees on municipal properties; and perform related work as required.
Trims, prunes, and maintains trees on municipal properties working from the ground, and may use aerial devices, ropes, and saddles for training purposes; uses small and large power equipment and hand tools to cut and trim trees; plants, removes, irrigates, cultivates, and fertilizes trees and shrubs; makes immediate minor repairs to damaged irrigation systems; may be required to drive a light or heavy-duty truck and/or operate a crane truck; operates stump remover, root cutters, crane truck, brush chippers, and skip loader and attachments; ensures safety of property and persons by placing warning devices and other safety apparatus at job sites; may cut and remove concrete; may be required to perform additional functions including, but not limited to, landscape maintenance of parks and other municipal properties; drives on City business.
Employment Standards
Knowledge of the characteristics of shade and ornamental trees used in the urban forest; the methods and equipment used in planting, pruning, trimming, and removing trees and shrubs; spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Skill in using power saws, shears, axes, pruning tools, and other standard tree trimming tools and equipment.
Ability to observe and ensure safe practices and procedures; perform heavy manual labor; follow written and oral directions; safely drive a light or heavy-duty truck; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public; work holidays, weekends, after hours, and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions while exposed to the elements.
Education/Training:Â Six months of recent paid full-time experience in general tree maintenance, landscape maintenance, horticulture, or related work.
Age: At least 18 years of age at time of appointment.

Special Conditions & Requirements: Possess and maintain physical condition required to perform essential functions of the classification which include the physical ability to: lift, pull, lower, and carry considerable amounts of weight (for weight in excess of 50 pounds, tools or other appropriate assistance are recommended to perform the function); bend in all directions; climb ladders; stoop; kneel; reach; twist; squeeze with arms and hands; stand for extended periods of time.

License & Certificates:Â A valid California Class "C" driver's license or equivalent at time of appointment. A valid California Class "A" driver's license or equivalent within one year of appointment. A crane certification may be required based on job assignment. All required licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.
Desirable Qualifications: A valid California Class "A" driver's license or equivalent and certification as a Certified Tree Worker by the International Society of Arboriculture at time of appointment.
