Precision is building a direct connection between the human brain and computers, to benefit the hundreds of millions of people worldwide suffering from neurological conditions. Established in 2021, we are a leader in the development and commercialization of brain–computer interfaces (BCI).
As a Precision employee, you will be collaborating with experts across a diverse array of fields–including neurosurgery, mechanical engineering, machine learning, and microfabrication–to push the boundaries of what is possible. You will be joining a well capitalized and fast-moving company. In the two years since Precision’s founding, we have built and validated a product and have begun human trials in partnership with some of the country’s leading neurosurgery programs. And you will be working toward a deeply meaningful goal: restoring function to people living with devastating neurological conditions, including stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative disease such as ALS. Our platform will enable these individuals to regain independence, communicate with loved ones, and return to work.
We are seeking an experienced Director of Machine Learning to lead our efforts in developing cutting-edge machine learning solutions for brain-computer interface (BCI) applications. This role is crucial to advancing our mission of creating transformative technologies that bridge the gap between the human brain and digital systems. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of modern machine learning and signal processing (ideally, in biomedical domains), a strong track record of shipping machine-learning based products in the healthcare space, along with strong leadership abilities to drive innovation and guide our team of talented ML engineers and researchers.
Key Responsibilities
Specifically, the Director of Machine Learning will be responsible for providing the following attributes to Precision’s machine learning efforts:
- Strategic Leadership: Define and own the strategy for our ML/ephys function, including model deployment, experimentation, infrastructure, and research, aligned with the company’s long-term product roadmap.
- Team Management and Development: Build, mentor, and manage a team of machine learning engineers and researchers, fostering a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and growth.
- Research and Development: Drive collaborative research initiatives to explore cutting edge machine learning methodologies, algorithms, and models tailored for BCI applications.
- Process development: Build scalable processes to deliver ML that is auditable, explainable, and safe, especially in a regulated environment
- Project Management: Oversee the end-to-end development lifecycle of machine learning projects, from ideation and data collection to timely model deployment and performance evaluation. Ensure ML roadmap is aligned with company objectives and efforts are balanced between short-term delivery with long-term research and innovation strategy.
- Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate closely with clinical and neuroscience teams to ensure models reflect real-world use and patient needs. Represent the ML function in leadership discussions and drive cross-functional alignment.
- Innovation and Intellectual Property: Identify opportunities for innovation, creativity, and experimentation within the machine learning domain, contributing to the development of intellectual property and patents.
Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
- Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Neuroscience, or a related field with a focus on machine learning, artificial intelligence, or signal processing.
- 8+ years of experience in ML, applied research, or data science, with 5+ years in industry, and 3+ years in technical leadership roles
- Proven track record of leading machine learning teams and projects, ideally within a start-up or fast-paced, innovative environment.
- Extensive experience in developing and deploying machine learning models, particularly in domains requiring the analysis of complex, high-dimensional data such as neural signals.
- Experience managing cross-functional teams or matrixed orgs; ability to prioritize and execute in complex environments
- Strong comprehension of machine learning algorithms, neural networks, deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), and statistical modeling.
- Familiarity with BCI technology, neuroimaging data, and brain signal processing techniques (e.g., ECoG, EEG) preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a diverse team of engineers and researchers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proven experience working in regulated, hardware/software-integrated domains (medical devices, neurotech, robotics, etc.)
