UNM Medical Group, Inc. is hiring for a
Genetic Counselor: for the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. This opportunity is a full time position located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Minimum $68,785 - Midpoint $87,672*
- Salary is determined based on years of total relevant experience.
- Salary is based on 1.0 FTE (full time equivalent) or 40 hours per week. Less than 40 hours/week will be prorated and adjusted to the appropriate FTE.
Summary
Under limited supervision, provides direct patient care, including risk assessment, genetic counseling, and test coordination for individuals with personal or family histories of cancer. Responsibilities include patient evaluations, psychosocial assessments, and developing personalized screening and management plans. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team including genetic counselors, social support services, attending physicians, fellows, residents, and nurse practitioners. The role involves active participation in research activities/protocols within area of expertise as well as supporting student education and developing patient materials.
Minimum Job Requirements Of a Genetic Counselor
Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or directly equivalent discipline. Board Certification as a Genetic Counselor. Licensed by the New Mexico Medical Board. Completed degree from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Verification of education and licensure will be required if selected for hire.
Duties And Responsibilities Of a Genetic Counselor
- Coordinates and delivers direct patient care, ensuring compliance with regulations and quality standards.
- Gathers patient medical and family histories via clinic visits, telemedicine, and records review.
- Assesses risk, discusses testing options, obtains informed consent, coordinates testing, and facilitates sample collection.
- Interprets results, develops personalized screening/management plans, and provides follow-up recommendations.
- Conducts psychosocial assessments and ensures accurate, confidential patient documentation.
- Informs referring providers about patient care via the established patient platform(s).
- Actively participates case conference, board, or working groups as needed.
- Facilitates undergraduate shadowing opportunities and develops patient educational materials.
- Assists with research protocols as needed.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
